Use as much force as you can without losing your balance once the door opens.
Push or pull the door as you turn the key.
Examine the handle and trim on the interior side of the door.

With many older doors you need to pressure the door as you fiddle with the key as the warped door is bending the lock at an awkward angle.
But there are other methods that can be used to secure a door without a lock such as door wedges and alarms.
If you have a key for the deadbolt use it.
Slide the plastic card against the angled portion of the metal locking mechanism and push it back out of the doorjamb by applying leverage from the portion of the plastic card that you are holding.
This key should be different from the key that fits the doorknob.

Just affix the tape to your deadbolt lever on the inside of the door fold it around the door close the door pull the tape and voilĂ you ve locked the deadbolt.
