Clean away the oil with soap and water then dry the lock thoroughly and prime with metal primer. Leave the lock in the door but only remove the cover and other parts to get in to clean it. Place the lock case into a vice with the face outside of its grip.

Clean the lock face. This works for your cookware too. First clean the keyhole with a penetrating lubricant like wd 40. Immediately dry all surfaces with a clean towel.

About a tablespoon apiece is a good place to begin depending on how much hardware you plan to clean. Slide the key in and out of the lock several times to spread the lubricant. When spraying the lock. Then use super fine steel wool to clean buildup and paint from the lock face.

Another way to do it is to coat your key with the graphite powder first and then simply insert it into the lock.
