Adjusting garage door springs is a common repair.
Disconnect the lift cables then slide the cable drums and springs off the torsion tube.
The torsion springs and all the related apparatus are situated at the top of a garage door.
The torsion shaft powered by the spring lifts drums that easily winds cables connected with the doors at the bottom.
Once your garage door is secured remove the spring hook from the track hanger which will allow you to move the hook and adjust the spring s tension.
Without the springs the door is very difficult to lift.
Remove the clamps and pliers from the torsion tube and track and lift the door about 3 ft.
Finish with a test of the garage door tension spring.
If the door falls when you let go add a quarter turn to each spring.
Use locking pliers or a c clamp to secure the torsion tube to the center bracket to keep it from moving.
To adjust your garage door s side mounted springs first open your door fully and secure it in place with a c clamp below the bottom roller.
Hold the garage door in this position by attaching a c clamp to the track at a point below the lowest door roller wheel.
This is accomplished by opening the garage door as fully as possible until it hits the stop bolt on the track.
If the door springs are properly adjusted the door should stay in place when you let go.
Then use a wrench to loosen the set screws on both lift cable drums.
When garage doors won t close all of the way or they close unevenly spring adjustment may be called for.
