Most of the time all you need to do is jab a paperclip in the hole and push on the locking mechanism.

Insert the paper clip into the hole.
There is a small button inside the knob that serves as the locking mechanism.
You re going to need a screwdriver with a skinny rod because the thicker rod won t be able to fit through the hole.
If the doorknob has a slit on the outside handle a butter knife should do the trick.
Then just turn and twist until the screwdriver catches on a groove and the lock clicks open.
If the locking mechanism is a latchbolt the kind of bolt that is spring loaded and has one angled edge and the angled edge is facing away from you you can hook it with a wire hanger.
Once the clip is straight position the straight end inside the hole on the outside of the doorknob.
Move the paper clip around until it catches something or a click is heard.
Using minimal force push the clip into the hole until you hear a light click or pop sound.
Make a hook at the end of a second pin to create a tension lever.
Without too much time or effort the paper clip should contact the button and release the lock.
